Taxi drivers in the UK must fill in a self assessment tax return if they have worked as a self employed taxi driver at anytime during the financial tax year. Self assessment tax returns should be filed by 30th September each year although the final deadline is the following 31st January. Failing to file the taxi accounts by 31st January attracts a 100 pounds late filing penalty with interest being charged on any tax not paid by this date.

The simplest solution to preparing the taxi driver accounts is to collect all the taxi receipts and expenses together, hand them over to an accountant who will prepare your self assessment tax return and might charge between 150 to 450 pounds for the privilege. That is taxing. Taxi driver accounts does not have to be that taxing. You can prepare your taxi driver accounts and self assessment tax return yourself but do something.

These taxi driver notes in preparing the taxi driver accounts and completing the self assessment tax return are to assist that process.

Mileage Allowances

Taxi drivers can claim as an alternative to vehicle running costs mileage allowances of 40p for the first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile thereafter. You may not claim mileage allowance and vehicle running costs. Should you choose to claim the mileage allowance then keep good records of mileage covered, purpose of journey.

Taxi Capital Allowances

If you bought a vehicle in the financial year 2007-08 and used the vehicle as a taxi you can claim a first year writing down tax allowance of 25% of the cost of the taxi, restricted to 3,000 pounds for vehicles costing over 12,000 pounds. On vehicles purchased in previous tax years you can claim 25% writing down allowance on the balance not yet claimed. Many taxis are bought and sold each year and where a taxi is sold the capital tax allowance that can be claimed is the difference between the written down value for tax purposes and the amount of sale proceeds. First year allowance on non vehicle assets in the current tax year 2007-08 is 50% for small businesses.

Taxis bought on Hire Purchase

Claim capital allowances on the original cost of the vehicle, interest and other charges count as business expenses and go in the self assessment tax return box 3.61 Other Finance Charges

Taxi Running Costs

When completing the self assessment tax return taxi drivers should enter fuel costs in box 3.46 cost of sales not motoring expenses. A standard check carried out by any competent inland revenue inspector enquiring into a self assessment tax return would be to check when the taxi driver was on holiday and examine if fuel receipts had been included for this period. Not many tax returns are enquired into as the system is based upon trust but taxi drivers should ensure their accounts do not contain this fundamental tax fiddle. Taxi running costs also include repairs, servicing and parts including tyres, road tax, taxi insurance and AA/RAC membership. Taxi administrative costs and expense items such as hiring the radio should be entered under general administration expenditure.

Household expenses

If you run your taxi business from home you can claim a proportion of household expenses as business expenses in the taxi accounts. Household expenses are likely to be disallowed unless they are either specific to the business or a specific area of your home is devoted entirely to your taxi business. Using part of a room part time would not be sufficient to include the household expenses in the taxi driver accounts.

Spouse Costs

You can claim expenses for partners who work for your taxi business and payments up to 100 pounds per week would not attract income tax or national insurance however any payments claimed in the taxi driver accounts must be real payments for real work done. As the claiming of a partner wages as a valid business expense is an area potentially open to abuse the Inland Revenue naturally take a strict view on such claims. Care is required to justify the partner as an expense.

Other Expenses

Enter all business expenses in a named expense box on the self assessment tax return. Avoid entries in box 3.63 Other Expenses if possible as any significant amounts in this box may give rise to an Revenue enquiry into the self assessment tax return.

The better and more detailed a taxi driver keeps records of incoem and expenditure throughout the year offers the best chance to pay the least taxxes at the end of that year. This is because with meticulous records every self employed taxi driver can then do the calculation of whether to claim mileage allowances ot vehicle running costs. Without good records the most tax efficient option cannot be made. The decision to claim mileage allowance or taxi running costs can and often does change during the financial year. In general when a more expensive taxi cab is purchased then the capital alloweance of 3,000 pounds will often outweigh the potential mileage allowance although if the vehicle is low value the mileage allowance might be the best option and a method of saving valuable tax pounds which you are entitled to. The best taxi accounting software will automate the comparison of taxi mileage allowances with taxi running costs doing the taxi accountants work for you.

Chartering a bus can be a very difficult task especially if the organized event falls on a peak season. Buses have different sizes and types. If you have no idea of what your company or family needs, this makes the search extra difficult. Charter buses are usually use for airport transfer, local shuttling, bus tour, company outing, wedding, birthday party, bachelor/bachelorette party, corporate event, athletic team, family reunion, school event, sightseeing, extended trip, or any other group bus charter service or ground transportation. It is important to determine beforehand on what occasion will the chartered bus be used? What specifically are the needs of the user? These are needed to help the user tailor fit their search and meet the criteria they identified for that specific occasion where it will be used.

1. Ask Yourself:

- Does the company have its own maintenance program?

- Does the quote include parking and tolls?

- For trips over the road: How many local miles are allowed per day after reaching your destination? What is the charge for exceeding them?

- Does the company own the bus you will use, or will it be brokered out?

- What is their cancellation policy?

- Is the bus available for inspection before chartering?

- What affiliations are they members of? How involved in the industry are they?

- Can they provide a insurance certificates showing they have the state required $5 million in coverage?

- Does the bus operator have a cell phone and the company, a 24 hour phone line in case of a breakdown?

- Who pays for the drivers hotel room?

2. Safety

Buses are used more in terms of traveling because of their safety. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Center for Transportation Analysis proved that buses are twice as safe as flying and 46 times safer than driving an automobile. Furthermore, they reach more destinations and take you right at the doorstep of your destination than when you go flying and riding the train where it just drop you off at the nearest stop. More benefits of using charter buses includes: mobility, fuel efficiency, better for the environment and inexpensive.

3. Bus Types

- Charter Bus / Deluxe Motor Coach

- Minibus

- School Bus

- Entertainer Coach / Sleeper / Tour Bus

- Executive Coach / Day Coach

- Limo Bus

- Trolley

- Double Decker

- Van

4. Bus Travel Requirements:

- Usually, 22% deposit is required by the bus company.

- Final payments should be settled after the travel is complete.

- Cancellation should be made 14 to 30 days before the schedule with no penalty.

- For best booking arrangement and to ensure availability of the bus, book at least 21 days before the travel.

- Gratuity (tip) is valued at 10% apart from the total payment.

- Most bus companies include parking, tolls and other fees.

- The user is responsible for the hotel room of the bus operator if its overnight. Usually hotels give complimentary rooms for them.

- Alcohol is usually allowed in the bus with a deposit of $150. Rarely is smoking allowed inside the bus.

Drunk driving in today’s world is the most crucial crime one can commit. Drunken driving causes harm not only to the driver and members in the automobile but also the other people, they can be any one, a pedestrian or even a member of the colliding vehicle. If one is convicted of drunk driving then in most states the automobile insurance rates are likely to go up for at least three years and will burn a big hole in ones pocket. The insurance rates go up even before one has completed the punishment or is done with the compensation. All states differ in the law that they possess. It may differ a bit but in every state if one is convicted of impaired driving, the driver’s rights is suspended for at least 30 days to one year. In order to get driver’s license and rights back, one will have to provide the licensing agency with a certain form called an SR-22 form, which proves that one has motor vehicle liability insurance. When one goes to auto insurance agency to get an SR-22 form, company will consider him as “high-risk” driver and increase his insurance premiums. This can make their insurance premium double or even triple. Whether one is a proud owner of the motorbike or is a driver of the minibus or just a chauffer, it will affect everyone. Thus no matter what situation comes, it is always preferable to have motorbike insurance or the mini bus drivers insurance for the driver as well as the vehicle.

September 2006 will see the introduction of new laws regarding child restraints in cars.

Current laws state: -

Children aged three to 11 (inclusive) and less than 150cm tall are permitted to travel in an adult seat belt if no child restraint is fitted.

New legislation says: -

Children aged three to 11 and under 135cm have to be seated in child seat or booster (designed to be used with an adult belt), suitable for their age and weight.

Children taller than 135cm (4ft 5ins) or aged 12 or over must wear an adult seat belt where one is fitted.

The driver is responsible for ensuring these rules are complied with until the child reaches the age of 14, when they must take responsibility for their own safety.

The Department of Transport believes that, by making sure that children are securely restrained and not allowed to use adult seatbelts until they are sufficiently tall for them to work in the proper manner, 2,000 child injuries and deaths will be prevented.

The penalty for failing to comply with these regulations will be a fixed penalty fine of 30 or, if the case proceeds to court, a fine of up to a maximum of 500.

Exceptions will be allowed in emergencies, cars without seatbelts, and when children are passengers in taxis.

Information on child-seat safety can be obtained from the Child Accident Prevention Trust, http://www.capt.org.uk or from the governments website http://www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk theres a question and answer section on government website which is very comprehensive and seems to answer every question you could think of.

Theres a good choice of car seats available, and you should always ensure that they are made to conform to the European Union safety standards. For a young child its probably worth investing in a seat that can be adjusted as your child grows.

For an idea of what youd have to pay for a seat that would take your child from 9 months to 12 years, the Recaro Start seat can be bought for around 200.

Theres the Evolva 23 seat, from Britax, which is adjustable and suitable for children weighing from15kg to 36kg and up to 135cm (4ft 5ins). The back of the seat can be extended as the child grows, so that the head is always supported. This costs around 65.

For a baby of up to 9 months, or around 13kg, a rear facing approved car seat is acceptable, fitted on either the front passenger seat or in the back of the car. It must no be used in the front if an airbag is fitted.

Its extremely important that the seat is fitted properly, and many suppliers offer a fitting service. Do remember that its important that before you have the seat fitted; make sure it fits your child.

The 18 September is the date that the Department of Transport is aiming for, so remember, after this date you need to comply with the new rules.

These laws are to be taken seriously. Parents and regular carers are not the only ones who need to be car seat ready. You may occasionally take your, say 9 year old, grandchild out with you. The big difference there is that, prior to September 18; no special steps had to be taken. After this date youll need to equip yourself with a seat or booster.

If you are in the unfortunate position of being involved in an accident, and if your child or children are not travelling in an approved car seat or booster, your insurance may not be willing to pay out, resulting in what could be a considerable personal claim against the driver, whose responsibility it is.

Parents and (even occasional) carers please take note.

Do you know the real purpose of insurance – any insurance? To cover a loss that the insured cannot afford to bear. If you can afford it, there’s no point wasting money on insurance. If you have a six-year-old 19″ TV set, you probably wouldn’t buy insurance against repairs because if it breaks down, you’d probably just go buy another one. But for most companies, they have to have insurance; they can’t afford not to buy it. But the objective should be not to spend too much money. Nor do you want to adequately insure yourself.

Consider your insurance needs if your business has multiple vehicles. There are generally two parts of your insurance coverage: damage and injury to your property, and damage and injury to everyone else’s. Actually, for your own property, there are also two parts: collision and comprehensive. Collision is when your vehicle strikes something; comprehensive is everything else. If you run into a tree, your collision coverage (minus the deductible) pays for the damage to your vehicle. If a tree strikes your car because it fell on it, or a storm uprooted it, your comprehensive (again minus the deductible) pays for the damage to your vehicle.

As far as what coverage you take for your vehicles, you should consider your options as far as carrying insurance on them. Most people – and companies are just ‘people’ who spend someone else’s money instead of their own – either overpay or underbuy the insurance they need.

For example, if you run a business that does any kind of metal repairs, you can probably do your own body work on your vehicles. Therefore, you might not need to be carrying collision or comprehensive coverage. Or you might consider raising your deductible. Also look at how your insurance covers you: if you operate a taxi service, your insurance may not provide any coverage to you or your drivers unless they are at fault; if someone hits them and they’re injured or one of your cabs is damaged, your insurance may not cover it, they have to sue the other driver.

What you do want to look at are the most important part of your coverage, and the one that is most usually mandatory: public liability. In some states, all you’re required to carry is the state minimum, which might be as low as $15,000. This amount is so low as to be ridiculous. In fact, most common carriers are required to carry at least $5,000,000 in public liability per accident, and in some localities, if you do business with a government agency

Taxis are considered one of the most convenient and popular means of transportation. Many people ride cabs because it is faster and more comfortable than other carriers.

However, like many other vehicles, it can never avoid accidents. In Los Angeles alone, the Department of Transportation has listed down more than 2, 400 taxis and taxi accidents have increased in such alarming rate.

This is due to congested roads, which are packed with taxis and other vehicles. And because there are many drivers who do not strictly observe traffic rules, accidents do happen. Additionally, there are also some cab drivers who are operating illegally while some have no license and proper insurance.

Other contributing factors to taxi accidents are improperly maintained vehicles, incompetent and not properly trained taxi drivers, defective engines, imprudence of other drivers, driving under the influence of alcohol, drivers fatigue, bad road and poor weather conditions.

Duties of Taxi Drivers

The state requires cab drivers to take extra care and be more cautious while driving at road since they are carrying passengers. It is their duty to secure their safety.

Once a taxi got involved in an accident, it is presumed that the driver acted without reasonable care and attention. This is according to the contract of carriage.

Contract of carriage is a special contract or agreement between the driver and the commuter. This entails the cab driver to ensure safety at any time you ride in his taxi. He must also make sure to drive along the right destination keeping you safe and unharmed.

Nonetheless, contract of carriage does not apply in all circumstances. It also has some exemptions including accidental causes or actions that are unavoidable and out of the drivers control, enemies along the road like co-drivers and big trucks, and faulty or defective products.

Safety Guidelines for Taxi Drivers

Drivers should be diligent while at road, and they are also compelled to follow certain guidelines. Abiding with these requirements is very necessary to avoid accidents.

1.	Taxi operators must have a professional drivers license to assure that they are properly trained.

2.	Their cabs are also required to be insured and must be properly assessed and inspected by the city.

3.	Drivers should strictly adhere with operations rules and traffic regulations.

What is a Safe Taxi

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation advices commuters to follow safety precautions to avoid getting involve in any road mishap.

Make sure that the taxi you will ride has a seal of the Department of Transportation.

Never ride a taxi if you are not comfortable with the drivers actions and behavior.

When you ride a cab, make sure that you remember the taxi name and its company. If possible, know the name of the driver.

Better to ride the authorized franchise taxis in the city. Some of them are Bell Cab, United Checker Cab Company, Beverly Hills Cab, City Cab, Checker Cab, Yellow Cab, Independent Taxi, United Independent Taxi and United Taxi of San Fernando Valley.

Los Angeles Taxi Accidents

In Los Angeles, taxi accidents have caused serious injuries to thousands of victims, and some unluckily died. Unfortunately, not all of those victims were given justice and adequate recoveries because they failed to get the right legal assistance for their cases.

Hence, when you or your loved ones were involved in taxi accidents in Los Angeles, you should seek legal representation from duly qualified personal injury lawyers.

It all started when my plane to Cebu was delayed by 5 hours.

While my fellow-passengers around were acting like enraged volcanoes spewing lava, cursing the catastrophe that befell upon usI smiled and closed my eyes. Instantly, I felt peace. I whispered, Lord, you have a special surprise in store for me.

And in minutes, I discovered my gift.

That special surprise was Ray, a man who would bless me with his life. He also gave me key business ideas that would double my income.

He greeted me with a firm handshake and a friendly smile. I watch you on TV, he said, and I text my family and friends to watch you.

Like me, Rays flight to Mindanao was delayed for 8 hours. (All the flights that day were delayed. The airport looked like a refugee camp with people sitting on the floor and crowds begging for food from the airline personnel.)

I didnt know why, but I sensed a connection with the man in front of me.

Later on, I discovered why.

As we found seats and ordered coffee, Ray shared with me the riveting story of his life. I was so swept away by his experience, I forgot all about my coffee.

I went to Bible School and became a Pastor, he said. I pioneered a small church. But after being a Pastor for 3 years, tragedy struck. His wife lost a baby boy in her pregnancy. The trial caused Ray to think about his family more.

Its lonely being a Pastor, he explained. The problems of my flock are all my problems. But my problems were only mine! So I asked my people to pastor their pastor too. Slowly, he delegated his roles to his congregation as he felt a need to focus on his familyespecially their financial needs.

His joined corporate life. For 6 years, he worked for a big company as their Regional Manager for the entire Mindanao (Southern region of the Philippines). He was earning P50,000 a month (US$1000+), a big sum during that time. But at the end of the day, he was still broke. In fact, he was in debt to the tune of P1.2 Million (US$26,000+)including a warrant of arrest.

To survive and feed his children, the former Regional Manager became a Taxi Driver. It was an incredibly humbling experience. But he learned important lessons that would change his life forever.

Rey was now only earning P350 a daya far cry from what he was earning before. But it was here where he learned how to manage his money.

It was here where he learned how to live within his means.

It was here where he learned how to save.

Ray said, People like to manage what they dont have. Thats why theyre poor. By borrowing for stuff they cant afford. During that year as a Taxi Driver, I learned to manage what I had. And I was actually better off earning P350 a day than earning P50,000 a month! Because now, I learned to manage my money.

After one year of being a Taxi driver, he borrowed enough money to buy cabs and became a Taxi Operator. But that was only a transitional step to learn how to run a business. His real goal was to be in the money business.

Ray wanted to own a bank.

So his first step was to work in a Rural Bankwithout asking for a salary. He simply wanted to learn. And 3 years later, when he learned enough, Ray built his own Rural Bank.

Today, his Rural Bank is going strong. So far, after 7 years, the bank has given micro-loans to over a thousand people in his city, providing them with capital for their small businesses. And with 97% repayment efficiency! Because of this, his bank is transforming the lives of the poor. He teaches them the habits of saving, investing, and entrepreneurship.

Ray explained, I ask people, Do you want to prosper? What do you have? You may not have money. But you have time. Not just time, but time to learn. So use that! Join an insurance company and be an agent. Or join a company and sell their product. The important thing is to learnand from there, branch out. Dont get a job to earn money. Get a job to learn! And dont start a business to earn money. Get into a business to learn! The money will follow.

He continued, Some people start a business and want to earn right away. But thats not wise. Starting a business is like a slingshot. You have to pull back. That means clearing the way. Take time pulling back. Because when its time to release, youll be surprised that your business will rapidly shoot towards the target.

Ray is a Serial Entrepreneur. At the back of his calling card is a list of his other businesses: a construction company, a property management company, salons, restaurantsplus a few more.

I never manage my businesses, he said, I pass it on to people who can do a better job. I make them part owners. Thats why I can own many businesses.

As Ray spoke, it was though I was hearing myself preach.

We both have the same beliefs about money.

Were both Preachers that address the practical needs of people.

Were both Serial Entrepreneurs.

And we both are fighting poverty by teaching three things to the Filipino: (1) a practical spirituality, (2) a more positive financial mindset, and (3) financial literacy.

Oh, one last thing: We both love our families.

At the airport, I met Rays lovely wife and beautiful daughter with him.

I sensed the happiness in his family. It was refreshing.

That day, my catastrophe turned out to be a rich blessing.

Not only for me, but everyone whos reading this blog right now.

Talking to Ray made me realize more than ever before that we should never tell ourselves, Im stuck where I am. My life will never change.

Keep dreaming my friend.

God has a wonderful plan for your life.

Pursue it with passion.

May your dreams come true,

Fuel savings

Whilst the Government carries on increasing tax duty on Petrol and Diesel, LPG has had its duty reduced twice during the last two budgets. Owners of fleet cars, taxis and other high mileage vehicles can save thousands of pounds on annual fuel costs by converting their cars to run on LPG

Costs no more for insurance

Many motorists believe that an LPG converted vehicle will be more expensive to insure. However, a survey carried out by the LPG Association (LPGA), essentially showed that this isnt the case. The top 20 insurance companies all said they insure a LPG converted car so long as the conversion had been carried out by an LPG approved installer. Out of the 20, only two insurers advised they would charge a higher premium.

LPG is safer than diesel or petrol

According to the LPG Association (LPGA), the gas is substantially safer to use than petrol or diesel. This is mainly due to the fact that the fuel is stored in a robust fuel tank, which is tested to rigorous standards. LPG tanks also shut down the gas supply if you have an accident.

It has never been easier to fill up

There are now well over 1,300 LPG stations in the UK. Traditional petrol pumps work much in the same way as LPG pumps and all LPG stations follow pretty much the same way of doing things. Most LPG pumps have clear diagrams to help on your first visit and it’s impossible to put diesel or petrol in your LPG tank by mistake.

LPG is popular all over the world

Travelling in an LPG vehicle can almost halve the cost of travelling in a petrol-powered car. LPG is readily available in Europe, however it is more commonly known as Autogas or GPL.

Autogas also enjoys great popularity in Australia, The Netherlands, Italy, Serbia, Poland, Hong Kong and Korea. The former Soviet republic of Armenia may, however, be the world leader in autogas use.

Reduced maintenance levels

LPG is clean burning, contains no lead or carbon deposits and LPG car owners experience on overall reduction in engine wear and tear. Maintenance costs on spark plugs, pistons, rings and valves are also reduced.

Government grants available

Whilst the Government continues to reduce duty on friendly alternative fuels and offer Congestion Charge exemption they are also offering grants to car owners, fleets and businesses which consider conversion to LPG or other environmentally friendly alternative fuels.

Congestion Charges

LPG car owners can sometimes qualify for a 100% discount on Congestion Charges. Your car has to be an approved vehicle type in band 4 of the Transport Energy Powershift Register. Your vehicle must also be supplied or converted by an LPGA Approved supplier. Your vehicle must also meet the emission standards set by the Transport Energy CleanUp Register.

You can switch back to petrol at any time

LPG works in such a way that, at anytime you choose, you can change back to petrol at the flick of a switch. The switch is mounted on the dash board of your car and is used to switch between LPG and Petrol. Converting a car back from LPG to petrol is also a painless process and reputable dealers should offer this as part of their guarantee.

Environmentally friendly

Traditional fuels such as petrol and diesel are constantly taking the blame from the Government as the primary cause of low quality air conditions in the UK. Automotive vehicles emit a mixture of harmful gases including Sulphur Dioxide Hydrocarbons, Micro particulates and Nitric Oxides to name but a few.

Poor air quality, due to high levels of toxic emissions, imposes costs to society that are mainly related to health care costs. Health problems resulting from these emissions include Congestive heart failure, Respiratory problems and Bronchitis, which all relate to poor air quality.

LPG cars produce substantially less emissions according to research carried out by the Norfolk County Council. Individuals and organisations that adopt the environmentally-friendly alternative automotive fuels and technologies are not only generating cost savings for themselves but also for the larger society.

It won’t be long before we can travel closer to the stars, thanks to Sir Richard Branson and his Virgin Galactic spaceships. However, astral travel or astral projection is a different matter entirely. You don’t have to pony up the 100,000 or so astronomical price for a space flight with Virgin Galactic if you merely want to do a bit of astral travelling. Some people believe we are all capable of astral travel – leaving our bodies during sleep or meditation. Now there’s a great idea – sign me up! I’ve tried to do it but so far haven’t managed to wake up on a beach in Hawaii as was planned. Oh well. Wouldn’t it be nice if we never again had to deal with airport parking, lost luggage, or security chaos and hassle! No packing to worry about – you could leave your luggage (emotional or otherwise) at home. Just have a nice mug of cocoa, go to bed, and wake up in your dream destination!

If you haven’t been able to master the art of astral travel, out of body experiences, lucid dreaming, or time travel – then virtual travel may be the next best thing. Just log onto your computer and, like Captain Kirk on the USS Enterprise, fill in your own captain’s log as you go. You can visit the exotic and interesting places you’ve always wanted to see – and for a fraction of the price. You could be at the Taj Mahal one minute and the Coliseum in Rome the next – and all without leaving your armchair and comfort of your own home.

Ticketless travel is becoming the new way to do things, as computers take over from the old labour-intensive paper ticketing – but you’re still stuck with all the downsides of travel. With virtual travel, you don’t have to worry about minor annoyances like getting your seat assignment or boarding pass, getting stuck in the screaming-baby section, or queuing for the only toilet that isn’t bunged up.

Scientists may one day succeed with the perfect recipe that will enable us to teletransport – scramble our bodies and reassemble them in another location – just like the crew of the Enterprise. It could be useful for many reasons – just think about the possibilities! Harry Potter had an Invisibility Cloak, which would be great for those times when you commit a social faux pas and wish the earth would open and swallow you up – or maybe when the taxman or auditor comes a callin’. Scientists are working on invisibility cloak technology – which could come in handy for politicians who feel compelled to make public apologies for their indiscretions – or the annoying ones who constantly dodge the tricky questions.

Some surgical patients have claimed to remember leaving their bodies whilst under anaesthesia during operations. Unfortunately, none of them have got any further than the ceiling or corner of the room – where they witness the gory goings-on involving their body. If only we could whistle for a celestial taxi from that corner in the ceiling and go off to an exotic beach. We could leave our swollen and bruised bodies to the painful recovery process in the care of professionals and return when all is well and functioning again. Sort of like taking the car in for a service and using a courtesy car to go off for lunch and a spot of shopping with a friend. Well, who knows what might be possible in the future. We didn’t know electricity existed before someone discovered it – and it had been there all the time!

Not so long ago no one would have believed it possible for ordinary people (albeit those with plenty of cash) to climb aboard a rocket ship and blast themselves into zero gravity. Technology has raced ahead in the last few decades at breathtaking speed. Those lucky enough to be able to afford a trip with Virgin Galactic will have a taste of an ‘out of body experience’ of a kind – at least a few minutes of weightlessness – when they can forget that they are still trapped in their bodies.

We have a virtual world readily available at our fingertips these days with computer technology. Just a few taps on the keyboard and we can travel with Google Earth or observe the heavens with Google Sky. We can be virtual tourists on a virtual earth, have a virtual relationship, or stay at home in a virtual garden with our virtual pet!

Coming back to reality, if you have to make do with your annual earthly holiday in Spain and get there and back on the budget airlines then, hey, we shouldn’t take for granted how easy air travel has become. Until we learn how to master astral travel – or Dr. Who-style time travel becomes a reality – we are stuck with the reality and annoyances of modern-day air travel. Maybe in our future we will need travel insurance to cover time warps. In the meantime, if getting to our dream destinations means crowded airports, delays and long queues – at least we have travel insurance to cover most mortal mishaps!

If you own several vehicles, then you will require fleet insurance, which is the same as personal vehicle insurance and covers for damage, injury or theft – except that it covers your entire fleet under the same policy. The most common types of fleet insurance available are for mini-fleets, taxi fleets, personal car fleets and haulage fleet.

Looking at the highly competitive market these days, it is very likely that you would easily be able to get the policy that best suits you, as companies constantly keep on reviewing their policies to make them better than the others.

There are many insurance companies who would customize their fleet insurance policy to cover all of your vehicles. In order to do this, the number of vehicles in your fleet should be more than a specified number. This number varies from one company to the other, according to their own policy.

One thing that might be really beneficial for a fleet owner is to adopt a risk management system, in which certain steps can be taken so as to reduce claims this system will make your premiums lower. Some of the most effective steps suggested by the fleet specialists are to buy vehicles which have good performance and are safe, the vehicles should be maintained according to schedule, the security devices should be checked and updated regularly, before appointing the driver he should be assessed for his eligibility to handle the vehicle in the right manner, the driver should be introduced properly with the vehicle through the handbook, the driver should be monitored for performance, drivers can also be trained if the need arises during their job. If an accident occurs due to the drivers fault, he should be held accountable so that the mistake is not repeated.

Some companies provide you hazardous goods insurance and green cards along with your fleet insurance. You can avail the hazardous goods insurance if you transport dangerous goods by road. The Green Card is a facility provided to you if you are going abroad. This green card is applicable in certain countries according to the policies of the company.

Besides providing coverage for the defined losses caused by accidents, theft, storms, vandalism, fires etc, companies provide many other benefits with the fleet insurance. Some of these benefits may be towing, emergency repairs, recovery and return of vehicle after theft, hiring costs after theft, replacement of locks and keys, cleaning up debris and more. However, there are certain limits to these additional benefits and you should be eligible, the criteria is mentioned in the different sections of the Disclosure Statement. The additional benefits and the criteria vary from one company to the other. It is highly recommended that you read this document carefully and understand the conditions.

The greatest advantage of fleet insurance is that you are saved from the cost and extensive hassle of having several policies and renewal dates for the vehicles in your fleet. Some other advantages include the smoothness and efficiency of the procedure when the claim is made as compared to other insurances.

One disadvantage of the renewal date being the same for the entire fleet is that you will have to pay the premium all at once, which may badly affect your cash flows.
